Solomon Temple viewed from The Tabernacle. Solomon Temple is a 5121-foot-elevation (1,561-meter) summit in the Grand Canyon. Solomon Temple was named after historical king Solomon by geologist François E. Matthes. Solomon Temple is a butte composed of Mississippian Redwall Limestone, which overlays shale of the Cambrian Tonto Group. Also note the unusual "stone table" in the bottom left.
Thanks for featuring a batch of mine from the Grand Canyon...
Unkar Delta : From The Tabernacle in the Grand Canyon, looking over the Unkar Delta to the South Rim, where the prominent peak is Comanche Point, with its pinnacle. The muddy Colorado meanders through the scene.
Cardenas Butte : A glimpse of the Colorado River from the summit of The Tabernacle in the Grand Canyon. The sunlit red summit in the upper center is Cardenas Butte. To its right, slightly lower is Escaldenas Butte, and further right is Escalante Butte. The Escalante Trail crosses the reddish plateau above the foreground cliffs. The horizon is formed by the South Rim with the Desert View Watchtower poking above the rim in the upper right corner.
Natural Cathedral and Colonnade : This formation at Whitmore Canyon resembles a cathedral built into the hillside. To the left is the white colonnade of basalt lava columns. Above those lie the black remnants of lava flows. This scene is at River Mile 189 on the Colorado in the Grand Canyon.
Cloud Streaks Over Rama Shrine : Cloud streaks over Rama Shrine (elevation 6,406ft - 1,953m), viewed from the summit of The Tabernacle in the Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.
The Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) is a black and white woodpecker with a red cap and distinctive white eyes. As the name implies, the acorn woodpecker depends on acorns and other nuts as its primary source of food. This woodpecker drills holes in trees where it stores nuts for later consumption. Their diet also consists of fruit, insects and tree sap. It drills larger cavities in dead trees to excavate a nest. Unlike other woodpeckers, the acorn woodpecker lives and nests in small flocks. The acorn woodpecker's habitat is oak forests of Oregon, California, and the southwestern United States, south through Central America to Colombia. This female acorn woodpecker was photographed in a tree near Walnut Canyon Lakes in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
Monument Valley, on the Arizona - Utah border, gives us some of the most iconic and enduring images of the American Southwest. The harsh empty desert is punctuated by many colorful sandstone rock formations. It can be a photographer's dream to capture the ever-changing play of light on the buttes and mesas. Even to the first-time visitor, Monument Valley will probably seem very familiar. This rugged landscape has achieved fame in the movies, advertising and brochures. It has been filmed and photographed countless times over the years. If a movie producer was looking for a landscape that epitomizes the Old West, a better location could not be found. This picture of the rock formations in the evening light was photographed from the Lee Cly Trail near the Monument Valley Visitor Center north of Kayenta, Arizona, USA.
